Video Transcript

Interviewer:Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Home Depot Sales Associate:Yeah, so I was on the floor sales, so I would go around and help customers with whatever needs they may have. Questions about products. They may have some help loading objects into a truck or a vehicle, anywhere from mulch to heavy stone. Once you worked there long enough, you can start working with the machinery. Since I only worked there a summer, I wasn’t able to do that, but general stuff like that.

Interviewer:What was the work environment like?
Home Depot Sales Associate:Very relaxed and independent. You would go on the job floor and you would seek out customers that looked like they needed help, look like they had some questions about a product and you would really take that upon yourself to do those duties.

Interviewer:What was your favorite part about working there?
Home Depot Sales Associate:Really just how independent it was and stressing that you could work at your own pace. You would definitely … I would not recommend slacking off. It’s not something that I did, but you had the opportunity to work at your own pace, really take time to get to know the customers that you’re working with and then you would help them until they really left the store.

Interviewer:Please describe the application and interview process.
Home Depot Sales Associate:Yeah, the application process, it was longer. If we’re including training it was the longest I’ve ever had to work with. There’s a lot of safety procedures that you have to go through, just with dealing with the heavy machinery, with different kinds of materials that people may not be familiar with. But the application process, a lot of it was just … It was a quick interview. They hire a lot in the spring. They hire a lot of people, especially high school, college students who are coming back for the spring, going into the summer and then they go into really just the training because that is so lengthy.

Interviewer:What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Home Depot Sales Associate:It was a lot about characteristics, especially if they were really trying to feel if you would take that upon yourself, the independent part of the job. They wanted someone who was motivated, self-motivated especially. Someone who would take accountability for what they were doing and their actions.

Interviewer:How were you notified that you received the job?
Home Depot Sales Associate:Yeah. Within a week I got a phone call. Within a week they contacted me for an interview after I submitted my application. And a week later they called me for interview and then they let me know after that week after they had gone through and done more interviews, that I had gotten the job.

Interviewer:What set you apart from other candidates?
Home Depot Sales Associate:I really went into the interview with a strong sense and I think I’ve always had a strong sense of self-motivation, taking pride in my work and what I’m doing and really working for an honest pay. So I think I really stressed that in the interview and that took me a long way.

Interviewer:What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Home Depot Sales Associate:That it’s a great opportunity, especially longterm. You don’t get any immediate benefits. Right off the bag you’re not going to have any discounts, you’re not going to get anything like that, but if you stay with the company, they offer discount and stock. They really take care of their employees. You can notice the actual employee make up and maybe older people in their profession still working at Home Depot, and for the sole reason and purpose of they do take care of their employees, especially longterm.
